18th Century "Bernardus Calcanius" Violin

The Italian violin labeled "Bernardus Calcanius" from Genoa, circa 1750, is a remarkable instrument with a rich history and exquisite craftsmanship. Bearing the name of the renowned Calcanius school, it stands as a testament to the skill and artistry of its maker, the Genovese luthier Bernardus Calcanius, who was active between 1710 and 1750 in Italy was highly regarded as the best maker of the Genovese school and likely received his training from the Tyrolean maker Martinus Heel, who settled in Genoa around 1700.

The carefully selected spruce and maple tonewoods, combined with the expert craftsmanship of the maker, contribute to the instrument's exceptional tonal qualities. The top, made from two pieces of spruce with medium to narrow grain, and the back, sides, and scroll, crafted from quarter-cut maple with narrow, irregular flames. The brown-orange finish gives the violin an exceptional and unique appearance. Measurements: Full body length of 35.3 cm, upper bout of 16.9 cm, center bout of 10.9 cm, and lower bout of 20.0 cm.

The Calcanius violin emanates a beautiful, smooth yet powerful sound that captivates both the performer and the audience. The violin's sound characteristics allow it to produce a wide range of tonal colors, from warm and velvety to bright and focused articulations. Its sound exhibits a remarkable maturity and richness that can only be attained through years of aging and refinement. As a testament to its authenticity, a Certificate of Authenticity by Reuning & Son Violins in Boston, MA, confirms its historical significance and adds to its value and desirability among collectors and musicians alike. The legacy of the Calcanius school lives on through this instrument, enchanting musicians with its captivating sound and connecting them to centuries of musical heritage.
