Xeno trombones feature a heavier gauge brass and a thick-walled, one-piece brazed bell which has been hand-hammered thousands of times for the ultimate in a big orchestral sound. The open-wrap F section gives a free-blowing response and the entire instrument has an evenness and balance you have to experience to believe. The yellow brass bell creates a tone with mass, projection and evenness across registers and dynamic ranges.
The YSL-882O-LN features a special cryogenic treatment by Yamaha in their Los Angeles Atelier facility. Through a process of slowly freezing the instrument to -325F and then slowly warming it tensions within the instrument are released, resulting in differences in it's timbre, response, and blow; many players equate this process to an "aging" of the instrument, similar to the natural aging process that occurs over decades.
This particular instrument is a demo model (still in like-new condition); it plays noticeably different from the standard 882O, with a different depth and complexity to it's sound, a different nuance and weight to it's response and a freer blow; the best comparison is as a cross between the standard Xeno and the 882OR Orchestral model. A great option for the player looking for an open-playing Yamaha but a bit more efficient then the OR model!
